Butterfly Jones is a cool new band started by Michael Gurley and Phil Leavitt from dada. I absolutely loved dada and they never got the recognition I felt they deserved, so I am doing what I can to help out Butterfly Jones. I'll do the same for Joie Calio (the other dada-ite) when his solo disc comes out, and dada if they ever get back together. In the meantime, the Butterfly Jones disc Napalm Springs came out July 24th, and it's fanatstic! Here is a review I wrote for Amazon.com: Napalm Springs - Butterfly Jones ***** <-- that's 5 stars Kind of hippie, kind of trippy, but with a definite modern edge, Butterfly Jones has delivered a debut cd loaded with memorable melodies, cool and insightful lyrics, and the slash and burn guitar of Michael Gurley. Gurley and fellow former dada member Phil Leavitt (along with a cast of.....well, OK, maybe a dozen or so) have crafted a set of songs that touch on a variety of musical styles and emotions. Love, hate, confusion, hope, rock, pop, grunge, it's all there, laced with an acid-tinged psychedelia straight out of the late 60's. Think of the Beatles with Jimi Hendrix on guitar locked in a studio with a drum machine and laying down some jams for the new millennium. From the self-destructive grunge chorus of the opening title song("If love doesn't tear me apart, I'll do it myself") to the sparse and haunting refrain of the finale, "Please", this disc rocks("Anywhere But Now", the first single), rocks harder(the "What the hell's going on?" relationship confusion of "Are We In Love Again?", rocks cooler (the detached hipster groove of "Alright") and has moments of quiet, simple beauty like "Wonder"("Don't it make you wonder, and ain't it beautiful?"). All in all, it makes Napalm Springs a wonderful place to visit....you might even want to live there.
